Picture Mount Frequently Asked Questions

A photo mount is a thin card that can be used to separate a photo from the frame and glass. This can be beneficial both from a visual perspective, providing an appealing contrast between the photograph and the frame around it, and functional, as having the photo right against the frame and glass can make them stick together or trap moisture, often ruining the photograph.

Photo mounts can be used to fit a small photograph into a bigger frame, creating a more impactful piece. They can also help to fit non-standard sized or shaped photos into regular, rectangular frames.

We advise that all paper art, prints, and photos should be protected by a mount when frames. In our 3-decade experience in this field, we have seen countless photos ruined because they stuck to the glass, or because the trapped moisture wore out the photo over time.

We use whitecore and blackcore mountboard.

Our photo mounts aperture are provided with a bevelled cut. Our whitecore mountboard will keep a pristine white edge for its whole lifetime, while our blackboard bevels stay a deep black.

The aperture of a photo mount is the hole in the mount that frames the photo. Using a custom photo mount allows you to not only customise its size, but also its shape. This means you can fit photos of any shape and size within a rectangular or square photo frame.

Frames are usually labelled with a size by the manufacturer, but if you have a store-bought frame and want a photo mount for it, we advise you not to use that measurement. It is always a good idea to measure the frame yourself when ordering a new mount. You will often find the sizes you’ve been given are actually rounded up or down, which would make a mount incompatible with your existing frame.

We also recommend you order a mount with an aperture slightly smaller than your photograph. This would give you enough of an edge to taper the back of the photo to the mount without showing the borders of the photo. For example, an A5 photo will likely fall through a perfect 148mm x 210mm aperture, affecting both the look and functionality of your photo mount and frame combination.

Please see our measuring guides for frames and mounts. You can measure in inches, centimetres (cm) or millimetres (mm), whichever you feel most comfortable with.

Picture Frames Direct prides themselves on showing the most realistic representation of their products on the website, so you know exactly what you’re ordering. However, consider that different screens may show colours in slightly different hues. This is why we recommend you order one of our samples before ordering a custom photo mount or frame. Samples can be ordered here.
